David Dodds

David is a licensed bat-worker and consultant, for whom conservation of wildlife is a way of life. Over the past five years he has notched up nearly 1,200 hours, surveying for bats and other wildlife.

As a project co-ordinator with the Bats and the Millennium Link (BATML) project, David used sets of radio-linked bat-detectors (a technology designed and built by David) to identify flight-paths used by bats. During 2006 he led a team of 35 volunteer surveyors in a project to identify foraging sites used by Daubenton's Bats on the Central Scotland canals.

Today David works as a freelance consultant, whilst working part-time on a post-graduate degree, concentrating on bat habitat use and the ectoparasites of bats. He is an active member of both Lothian Bat Group and Lothians Amphibian & Reptile Group and when time permits he is also a keen amateur bryologist (the study of mosses and liverworts).

David's consultancy work ranges from major contracts for large developers and utility companies, to one-off surveys of private properties. He is an affiliate member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM) and a contract bat-worker for Scottish Natural Heritage.

Over recent months, David has successfully completed work including:

  • Bat survey and mitigation advice for several new housing developments.
  • Surveys of two water pipelines, including locating unknown bat roosts in the vicinity and advising on limiting detrimental effects to flight routes and foraging areas.
  • Mitigation for demotion of several buildings containing bat roosts, including one site with roosts of two species with different mitigation needs.
  • Tree surveys for bats and birds, including the use of endoscopy.
  • Bat surveys of buildings and other structures planned for demolition or redevelopment .
  • Breeding bird and barn owl surveys.
  • NVC and Phase 1 habitat surveys.
  • Presention of a paper at the Scottish Bat Conference 2006.
  • Delivery of bat training workshops.
